Antimicrobial Use Within US Poultry Production

Aug 9, 2019 - The Antimicrobial Use Report (Poultry) by Dr. Randy Singer from the University of Minnesota was published today. This report, funded through a grant through the US government, demonstrates the development of a systemic data collection approach and presents a longitudinal analysis of data on antimicrobial use in the U.S> broiler chicken and turkey industries. This data spans from 2012-2017 and represents a significant portion of the industry. While the scope of the surveillance reports will be much narrower, publications on cattle (Apley) and swine (Davies) will also be published. FDA FR Notice on Zero-Day Withdrawal/Discard

Aug 8, 2019 - FDA published a request for comment that seeks information about current industry practices and the end user’s interpretation of labeling statements on zero time withdrawal. While not explicitly stated it seems this may be aimed at re-evaluating the agency’s definition of the time points known as “practical zero.” Deep in the announcement the FDA does indicate there is no safety concerns and tries to highlight the US’ continued decline in drug residue violations.
